Doctor-patient e-mail communication works

Since 2000 Seattle’s Group Health Cooperative has been offering its patients secure communication with their doctor via e-mail, and at 32,000 e-mails a month, they say it’s working for them. The secure e-mail system is part of Group Health’s electronic medical records system.

“E-mail … leaves my schedule open for patients who need acute, same-day appointments, so all of my patients get the care they need when they need it,” says Group Health’s Dr. Eric Seaver. “I can provide better care to patients with chronic conditions because I can now communicate with them on a weekly basis and make adjustments faster than I could if I was seeing these patients every three months in my office.”
